Removing the water closet door and creating a cased opening gives the water closet a bit more space for comfortable maneuverability. Adding a comfort height toilet and modern grab bar will help with independency.

A modesty wall is built at the shower entry and modern grab bars are added. Creating space for a removable shower bench and making sure the handheld shower wand is accessible while seated will help with independence. The strategically placed recessed niches can be easily accessed from a seated position. Placing the valve at the shower entry instead of under the shower head will allow water to warm up before entering. The shower will still be comfortable for anyone not needing handicap accessibility.
